Why do the media and public insist on calling Paul Gadd "Gary Glitter"?

His name is Paul Gadd.

I can not understand why the media, in particular are allowing him to be referred to as Gary Glitter. They should be calling him Paul Gadd. He isn't a pop star or a celebrity - he's a scum bag.

agreed? or not?

  1. Oh he is a scumbag all right, but calling him Gary Glitter instead of his given name keeps the heat on him. If they just called him Paul Gadd, no one would pay any attention to him and his devious pursuits would possibly be able to be resumed under a banner of anonymity. IMO this is why the press keeps referring to him as Gary Glitter.

  2. I agree with many of the answerer's it would cause confusion, I noticed that a lot of the questions were answered by americans last night and many of them didn't have a clue who we were talking about, how lucky are they.

  3. So people know who they're talking about.

People know the man as Gary Glitter.  They would't have a clue who 'Paul Gadd' is.  I guess they could say 'Paul Gadd, who was previously known as Pop Star Gary Glitter' but that's a bit long winded and certain elements of the media are very limited for time - particularly tv and radio news.

    Agree he's a scumbag.

  4. not...most people know him as Gary Glitter rather than Paul Gadd...and its quicker to say Gary Glitter than 'Artist formerly known as Gary Glitter'

  5. Its because thats what most people know him by, but soon everyone will know him by ' filthy nonce'

  6. But Gary Glitter is slang for a toilet so in this case it IS appropriate.

  7. Because he is known to the public as Gary Glitter, few people have heard of Paul Gadd.

If the press suddenly started referring to the well-known singers Harry Roger Webb and Gordon Sumner or famous film stars Marion Morrison or Ilyena Vasilievna Mironov no one would know who they were talking about. (Cliff Richard, Sting, John Wayne, Helen Mirren).

Paul Gadd is only news because he was once Gary Glitter the celebrity.  If this had been John Smith the plumber from round the corner it wouldn't be in the news.

  8. He found fame, and infamy, using the name Gary Glitter.  I don't think the majority of people would know who Paul Gadd is.  Shame he wasn't on that flight that crashed in Spain yesterday- not that I'd wish anyone to die in a plane crash.

  9. I was wondering that myself this morning.  As far as I know, Paul Gadd never actually officially changed his name, so Gary Glitter was just his stage name.

Why is he even getting on the news in the first place?  A paedophile being deported is hardly headline news.

  10. because thats the name everyone knows him by

they'd have to mention "gary glitter" anyway, and it'd just be tedious and pointless

  11. Agreed he is a scum bag, but the majority of us know him as Gary Glitter and as they say sh*t sticks :)

  12. because most people only know him by that name, if paul gadd was on the front page not everyone would read about him, thats what selling papers are all about

  13. I suppose the do it so that everyone knows who they are talking about, despite the fact only someone that lives under a rock doesn't know who he is. I think it probably encourages him to think of himself as a celebrity. Can you believe that he was thinking of making a musical come back?

  14. If 'it' changed its name legally, then that is its name.  I think it better that it is known as Gary Glitter, then we all know which low life is being referred to.  I'd like to bet it wishes it could change its name again in the hopes that it could in time become anonymous.  Not a chance!

  15. I guess it's because he is known as Gary Glitter. If he was referred to as Paul Gadd, there wouldn't be a story. As it is, the media are completely obsessed with him. I wish they would let it drop. Enough is enough. He represents a tiny tiny minority.

  16. That's Archbishop Gary Glitter to the masses now babe.

  17. In theory yes, they should stop "glamourising" him, however, he is known as Gary Glitter, and to refer to him by his real name would leave many people confused as to who was being talked about.

  18. If it said Paul Gadd hardly anyone would bother to read it as they wouldn't know who it was about.

  19. No one would have a clue who is being referred to if they call him by his real name!
