  1. when everyone votes for everything it is a true democracy (mob rule)

when we elect leaders to make decisions for us it's called a republic.  This is the kind of government we have.

  2. On a Federal level we have a Representative Republic.  That is that we elect a legislative body and President to create Federal laws.  That is spelled out in the constitution and other documents at the founding of our country.

Each state has their own constitution and rules for how laws are to be enacted, and correspondingly who votes and when.

  3. there are certain things that the United States law-makers are AFRAID to let people vote for, because it would mean less income for THEM.  An example would be:  A specialty tax on SUV's, since they guzzle a LOT more gas than cars do.  The auto industry would be hurt, LESS gasoline would be used, and people like Cheney and Bush , who rake in MILLIONS of dollars a month from oil companies...would "only" make a millions every OTHER month.   And exactly like the army guy said.....the U.S, is not a democracy...it's REPUBLIC.  Like in our "Pledge of Allegiance" states...."I pledge allegiance to the flag, of the United States of America, and to  the REPUBLIC for which it stands"...................
