Question:

Why do the pros use smaller tips?

I have an 11.25mm tip on my normal cue, but I have other cues with 13mm. I like my 11.25 for accuracy, but can work the ball more(english/masse) with the 13 mm.

Why do they like them?

  1. For the most part they do not. Most pros I know use 13.25 to 12.75 with 13 being the average. Bear in mind I refer to 9ball not snooker.

The reason for 13 mm in 9and 8ball is just what you found...the tip fits the size of the ball diameter.

    Luck

  2. the smaller the tip the more english can be applied

  3. I don't know who tells people this, but I've never known pros to use smaller tips. Some do of course, but it's far more common for them to have averaged sized (12.75-13.25mm as nine said) than small tips.

  4. In snooker, there are a number of pro's who use smaller tips (down to 9mm) as these are better for imparting spin on the ball. I should imagine the 11.25mm tips do the same when compared to a 13mm tip in pool.

  5. Gotta agree with Kevin I dont know 1 that uses a small tip

    More english ?? a 1000 and 1 other myths

    If Snooker no Idea

  6. With the huge amount of people switching to low deflection shafts(Predator,OB-1, etc), there are more people including pro's using smaller diameter shafts. The lower deflection shafts are generally anywhere from 11.75 to 12.75mm as part of the effort to lower the end mass of the shaft, thus lowering deflection.  As far as spin is concerned, the tip size between these sizes will not affect it at all.

On a side not, the low deflection shafts should really be called high deflection, because the shaft is designed to deflect away from the cue ball more than a standard shaft. It is the cue ball squirt that is lowered.
