Why do the public schools in the state of NY go by numbers (PS##) instead of a name?

Some go by name.  I was zoned to go to "Jamaica High School" but went to "Stuyvesant High School" instead.  Jamaica is the public HS for the area of Jamaica in Queens, Stuy is a public HS for students from all over NYC, with competitive admission.  It used to be on land that had been Peter Stuyvesant's farm, although it has moved.

  4. Hmmm thats a good question...I think it may have to do with different  districts in a particular borough. Maybe just a way to group them by area. I know that students'  address of residence has all to do with which [district] school you are assigned to.

    Mines was actually a CS###. O_o
