they don't i think you mean the goal umpires. they where those wierd hats because they don't run alot and need to protect their face if they are to stay there for the whole quarter

Probably to protect them from the sun or whatever. isnt it their uniform?  I dont think they need it they should have an umbrella and chair behind the goals to sit under in low scoring games lol.
