  1. scuff marks and abrasions makes the ball react funny.. give pitchers an advantage

  2. they do that because it helps the pitcher get a better grip on the ball.

  3. The dirt causes the ball to become slick and pitchers need a baseball with more grip. You will only see this in the upper leagues that have more money for baseballs.

  4. when the ball gets in the dirt. the pitcher doesnt want a ball with a lot of dirt on it. because he cant get a good grip on it and could be slippery

  5. A scuffed ball, will in fact move and rotate more if used after hit the ground.  The Spitball, made famous by Gaylord Perry, did the same thing.  The spit would make the surface of the ball smoother, giving the ball more movement, and sometimes unexpected movement.  A scuffed ball, will be spun unexpectedly on the mark, giving the pitcher less control.  Same for a ball that is fouled off.  The ball will rotate on the indented part of the ball.

  6. New balls are used in placed of dirty ones for safety issues. A dark, smudged ball is much harder to see, and thus get out of the way from than a clean, white ball. This practice is considered to have started after Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman was hit by a pitch that killed him on Aug. 16, 1920. He is still the only player to have died from being hit my a pitch in MLB.

    "Spitball ban put into place

In the early 20th century, balls were often intentionally moistened, scuffed or covered with dirt, causing pitches to move erratically and making them difficult to see. Before the 1920 season, team owners had decided to ban the pitchers’ use of spit and foreign substances on the ball, effective after the season.

Many observers believed that the spit and dirt on Mays’ pitch is the reason Chapman could not duck the pitch. Mays himself called the pitch a “sailer” that took an “unusual turn.'"

  7. crafty pitchers can use the scuff mark caused by the dirt on the ball and use it to their advantage.
