Why do the women track runners wear shades?

it's night time running and they are wearing shades. thats like some one wearing shorts when it's cold and snowing

They're wearing them because of all the bright lights on the field.  It's hard to see, even if it is dark outside.

As a former track and field athlete, I can say it's part of the "ritual." It's all mental and everything from what you wear, how it fits and how it makes you feel contributes to your confidence, focus and demeanor on the track. So in wearing the shades, some women feel more confident and focuses. It might sound crazy if you're not an athlete, but sports is really 10% physical and 90% mental.

It is so the other atheletes can not see in their eyes whether they are suffering or not.  If you can see a fellow contestant suffering and you are feeling good you are encouraged to force the issue further.
