why do the yankees trade for such great players right at the deadline when they already have great players. r they that stupid that theyd trade their terrible pitching staff and bullpen for players that they already have. for example xavier nady(although i dont know the exact terms of that trade im not sure who they gave up) but theres already bobby abreu in LF (thay traded for abreu just 1 year ago) and the pudje rodriguez deal u dont need an all star catcher to play for i season while the regular starter recovers from a injury. just a solid starter and u give up the only decent player in your bullpen besides riviera for him. now i may be a sox fan and im bs that they can get an all-star just becouse they feel like it but why would you increase your dynamic lineup when u have one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball?

  1. The only the reason the Yankees make those deals is because they want to win the World Series. Alright Bobby Abreu plays RF we had a prospect playing LF and he wasn't hitting, That's why we got Xavier Nady. We got Ivan Rodriguez because that same day Posada was getting shoulder surgey and he was going to be out for the season, and the Yankees starting catcher was there backup catcher and he doesn't really hit that's why we got Pudge.

  2. I'm a Sox fan and can answer this one.  Gardner in LF (not Abreu, he's in RF) is a prospect and not a very strong hitter.  Posada is hurt which takes his leadership off the field necessitating Pudge.  As for why Nady over others, he is a proven power hitting right hander which is something the Yankees were lacking (minus A-Rod) in their rotation.  The Yankees were getting beat too often due to too many left handed batters.  The only thing I question about the Yankee moves is who will move into the setup role now that Farnsworth is out?  Not to say that was a bad move either as his best years are behind him, but the loss of him weakens that bridge to Mo.

  3. With Matsui out you didn't think that they needed another outfielder?

With Posada out you didn't think they needed another catcher??

    Go back to sniffing paint!

  4. You're a dopey S.O.B.  Worry about the Sox and Yankee fans will worry about the Yankees.

  5. Pudge Rodriguez asked to be traded. The Tigers contacted the Yankees-- not the other way around. The Yankees just bargained and agreed to some terms.

The Yankees stole Nady/Marte, mostly because the Pirates' ownership is awful and they can't make a good deal to save their lives.

All the Yankees had to give up was Dan McCutchen (unproven in the majors), Ross Ohlendorf (struggled in majors, but I think he'll be okay, especially in pressureless Pittsburgh), Jeff Karstens (all ready a starter for the Bucs... he'll be okay), and Jose Tabata (who had a hamstring injury and got wrist surgery to end his 2008).

The Yankees won in that deal because they got bullpen help and a great bat for virtually nothing. Some people might be upset by the loss of Tabata, but the team is fine without him.

Getting Xavier Nady made sense. He has a great bat and knows how to field. I'm not sure what you are proposing, but how would Abreu play left field if they have him playing right? We put Melky/Damon in center, but there's still a hole.

Enter Nady. He works better than Christian/Gardner/Whoever because he's got a bat and he tends to not make rookie mistakes in the field. He's had an above average year, and those guys are just okay.

The Pudge deal is great for the Yankees because, like I said, they did not seek him out. Cashman wasn't even looking at catchers until the Tigers contacted him. Pudge plays the position and he can bat-- the Yankees get the best of both worlds. With Jorge, they had a bat. With Molina, they had defense. With Pudge, they get both.

In that deal, the Yankees gave up nothing. For years, people have hated Farnsworth and wore their "Anyone but Farnsworth" T-shirts, and now that he's gone, people are upset!

Just because the man had a few good games does not mean he is a good pitcher. He throws fast, but he can't locate his pitches. That will not change. He cannot hold leads. Farnsworth was not the only decent bullpen member. In fact, he would be the last person I would hand the ball to.

Pudge is in the last year of his contract. The Yankees don't have to sign him next year. He could easily walk as a free agent (or retire, because the older he gets, the harder catching will be on his body). Or maybe the Yankees do sign him (although I find it unlikely-- they'd have to pay too much and he'd get used half a year) to use for a while until Posada fully recovers.

I believe Molina is under contract for 2009 (and Posada still has three years left). Jorge won't be ready to even think about playing until at least Spring Training, so there's no telling how ready he'll be for the actual season. He might take a little while to adjust or ease into it. That leaves room for Molina to fill in.

Don't expect to see Pudge in pinstripes for 2009.

And I think you answered your own question, although I don't agree with it. If a team has one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball, they might have to increase their lineup to help it out.

But the Yankees don't have an awful rotation. It's not a strong rotation, I'll give you that. Brian Cashman knows the Yankees need at least one more starter. Yankees fans were tense waiting for Washburn, but Pete Abraham implied that Cash has plans and will snag at least one decent guy off waivers.

What would the Red Sox know about all-stars? They just traded one away (and to do it, they had to give up three guys, including Ramirez, and $7 million) and got Jason Bay. Bay is a small defensive upgrade, a sure baserunning upgrade, but is less than half the bat of Ramirez. That puts a damper on the road to October.

The Yankees managed to make some helpful moves this year for practically free.

  6. Just worry about the Red Sox & leave the Yankees alone.  Pudge wanted out of Detroit

  7. The Yankees got things that they needed. They had a rookie playing in left field since Hideki Matsui got injured in Brett Gardner, and Jose Molina filling in for the injured Jorge. They picked up Nady, who played left field yesterday, and Pudge, who started at catcher yesterday to fill those holes. They also got Marte in the trade with the pirates, who is one of the best lefty relievers in baseball. Kyle Farnsworth blows up in basically ANY pressure situation, so I don't see how you can say that he's the best reliever they have beside Mariano.

And, they definitely do not have the worst pitching staff in baseball. Mussina has 13 wins, Joba hasn't given up more than 3 runs in his eleven starts, Pettite has 12, Chien Ming Wang was 8-2 before he got hurt, and Sidney Ponson is 6-2. If not for Wang's injury the Yankees would have three 12 game winners. Def not the worst staff in baseball.

  8. yeah they make the right deals at the wrong times. they're really digging themselves in a hole with all these extra hitters. what they need are pitchers and all they got was marte.
