  1. Draft horses are usually highly bred specialty horses.  They are often older in origin and are tied in with a particular country's culture.  It wasn't too long ago that these were working breeds for and many still are in other countries.  Many were bred for very specialized jobs.  The availability of most breeds (or at least their registered studs) is limited to their places of origin, making them rare and exotic.

  2. My guess is that draft horses are rarer than light horses. Supply and demand set prices. Things that are in short supply have higher prices.

  3. Seems like a waste of a good horse actually.

Maybe no-one wanted to get on the 18 hand youngster ?

Seriously though it does seem silly and a total waste of potential.

And it's not just you - it is WAY too much.

  4. i have a really good horse i bought for $200.00 she is gentle YOUNG horse the reason why i got her for cheap is because he leg is kinda funny but can still be ridden

  5. possilbly because of its pedigreed and its confirmonation and for showing uses

  6. For Drafts at least in my opinion go cheap. at least where i live.

Dont buy a 6,000 halter horse. They are for show and its basically a waste of money. i bought a draft for $850.oo and she drives and does trail. granted where you live they may not have many but if you go on horsetopia.com or horseville.com you can find drafts for even under $1,000.  Now im training a horse which is 3. You can start any horse at 2 or 3 but best 3. Their backs are ready to take weight. granted you can train a horse at 6 or even 12. but if the horse is trained for halter i suggest it stay at halter. now you said about rescue you can deff. find a draft at like every rescue for cheap. like i said around here people basically give them away.

Hope that helps. Good luck trying to find a horse. :]

  7. Because of there bloodlines. If there parents were really good breeders or god trained horses, they will cost more!

  8. no, thats pretty typical for heavy horses nowadays. The problem is they are becoming more and more scarce because the biggest reason heavy horses came into existence was for agriculture and war. We don't use them for either of those things anymore. Even wagons are slowing fading out because well, we have cars now. Therefore, the only people breeding and using these animals are those that use them for breeding and showing. Therefore, they generally have a pretty good bloodlines which is why you pay more for them. Yes, a few people enjoy them as trail horses, etc. But they are few and far between especially when there are other horses that are cheaper more "suited" for pleasure riding.

  9. people jack up the prices to see what they can get, sad really

In NC the horse market is WAY down, horses going for $300-800 for a GREAT horse

  10. most drafts are bred for conformation and not just bred to have a foal(except for the case of PMU foals).some breeders will sell their drafts for a higher price to ward off people from buying them because they are pretty and then dont take care of them.in the case of mares some breeders raise the price so it is out of reach of PMU buyers.killer buyers pay per pound so that one is obvious but some just inflate the price because they think they can.i bought my drafts from a divorce sale,,,,got a bargain.

  12. I see that you are looking for a draft horse. So if you are interested there is a rescue down here in Texas that has a huge belgian gelding up for adoption. He's not to old, he's broke to ride(I've been on him) and also broke to drive. His name is Palodan and he's just the cutest HUGEST guy ever. I'll give you their sight so if you are interested you can call or email them. Also, I've known the rescue owners for a while and they will haul him.

He's not on their page, but he is still out there. He would make you a nice trail horse.
