Why do they always ask this???

In Job applications there's a section that asks you if you or any family member has received help from the govt. (food stamps, etc) in the last few months...why do they ask this?

It has to do with government subsidies and tax breaks. If they employ so many people on or who have gotten government assistance they get that which is mentioned above, its the same reason they ask if your a veteran.
