Because he is a research scientist with a Ph.D (Doctorate) degree in Nuclear Physics

Ph.D's are also called "Doctor". You can get a "doctorate" in a variety of subjects from Science, Psychology, Math etc. and a "doctorate" is the highest certification you can get from a 4 yr College/University.

However Ph.D's are not Medical Doctors and can not treat people illness (those "Doctors" have the M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) degrees).

Ph.D's mainly do research and further the advancement of human knowledge in the subject area of their 'Doctorate degree' (ex. physics, biology, genetics, mathematics, psychology, sociology, pharmacology etc)
