  1. back in the last century, on wash day the last rinse for all white clothing and linen was with a nugget of blue dye in a little cotton bag. the actual color was close to that of the Carlton jumper in the 1960s and 70s, it was lighter than it is today - my mum used to call it "junior navy'.

    so Carlton's guernseys looked as though they had been blue bagged.


  2. In fact it's a corruption of "Blue Buggers". Or is it "Blue Beggars"? I'll second the next person's solution. I'm old enough to remember blue bags in the wash.
