Why do they call a driveway when you park on it and a parkway when you drive on it?

  1. 1. You are not supposed to park on a driveway. It is the "way" to "drive" to your house or garage.

    2. A parkway refers to the park  land between the roads. The park land slowly got smaller and then disappeared but the name remained.

  2. I dunno, but the word 'park' as in 'park your car' came from an old German word for an enclosure holding game animals.  Also, in the old times the military would make an enclosure with their wagons, creating a 'park' for cattle.  Such wagons were referred to as being parked.
