It doesn't hurt THAT badly--just a kind of twinging tingle. I've stubbed my toe and felt worse afterward. That's why it's funny. It's also "funny" in the sense of "odd," because it's the only place on the body that produces this precise reaction.

Because it makes other people laugh when you hurt your funny bone. If you bang it extremely hard like I did once, it gives this horrible tingly funny(notice the word?) feeling that hangs around for a long time, and is way worse then just lightly banging it. It made my arm feel dead for a long time. Hmm, that's a really good question!
