Why do they call rebounds "boards"

What does the word "boards" mean in accordance with rebounds? Thanks

  1. The goal is attached to a backboard, so a ball that doesn't go in often comes off of the backboard, so the term is from the backboard.




  2. Now I could be wrong, but it usualyy has to do with rebounds coming off the backboard....so it was just shortened to "boards"

  3. because for it to be a rebound you have to catch the ball once it bounces off the backboard or rim

    hence the alternative term, "boards"
