  1. its a nice way to put it...

  2. because they are special. DUH!

  3. Because they require SPECIAL EDUCATION, meaning different than the normal education that all the other kids receive, a more focuses and detail oriented type of education.

  4. Because they're afraid it would be offending to say

    "Different education"

  5. They don't call them special. The word 'special' is a modifier for the word 'education.' And it's called 'special' because it's a different kind of education and requires different training for its teachers.

  6. Another word for different.

  7. Special.. its better than being called something else demeaning right..

Some people require more help than others especially in school..  so they have people that can help them on a one on one basis..

  8. because they are different physical and mentally, but get the same respect as other humans do.

  9. because theyre all RETARDED and are definitely not our equals

  10. It's a PC word.

  11. Yes, you are special, but are you exceptional, for that is the word of the day for individuals with special needs in today's PC world....

  12. calling them special just marks them as different. and not in a good way........

  13. Well first, every parent thinks their child is 'special', no matter what.

As far as your question is concerned, they aren't calling the kids special, they are calling the type of instruction and intervention special, meaning different from the norm.  Special education refers to a service, not a place or person.  So it's not right to say 'He's special ed' or even 'He's in special ed'.  It's correct to say 'He receives special ed services'.

Students who qualify for special education are referred to as 'individuals with disabilites' and includes those with speech problems, learning disabilities, visual/hearing impairments, traumatic brain injury, mental retardation, severe medical issues and children with emotional / behavioral disorders.  The majority of students who get special education services have normal intelligence and don't need extensive service (meaning full day or special school)- heck, a lot of kids I test don't even know they are get special education services!

  14. they need special treatment.

  15. Actually, the correct term nowadays is Exceptional. That means they are unusual or extraordinary (not ordinary). In other words, they do not learn the same way that most people do and need something different to help them succeed.

And, yes, although I have no idea who you are, you are special, too!
