Why do they cut the grass with scissors before motorcycle races?

I'm watching the track race on the Speed Channel and they showed someone cutting the grass with scissors, What's wrong with using a lawn mower?

Because if they used a lawn mower it would be way to efficient and would put the guy with the scissors out of a job.

Are you sure it was grass and not astro turf ( imitation grass) more a plastic rubbery stuff.  though as it doesn't grow I cant see why they would cut it. Maybe it was a fan collecting a souvenir from the track

Edit: there are a few tracks that actually use astro turf. and yes I can imagine it. also find some tracks just paint the ground green.

whats the difference sliding on astro to sliding on Tarmac ?

the idea is to stay on the track. rubberside down. rumble strips are like grease when wet. plus I would rather hit astro than grass.  astro stays put - grass rips out giving no grip whatsoever.

Maybe the track owner is meticulous about his/her grass.
