Why do they give away surfboards at the Teen Choice Awards?

I know the surfboards are the prizes, but why that item specifically? If anyone knows I would love some insight!

Well to be honest they choose different themes to go along with the seasons and stuff like that, I'm sure it will change next time maybe but the reason for the surfboards is because it goes along with the summertime theme that they had going on at the awards....I don't personally know why they chose surfing because surfing isn't really that popular of a sport....
