I understand when their cornered down in the tryzone, but it would seem like they'd rather have the ball and slowly try and find a way to penetrate the defense. Also why do they kick it out of bounds so much also?

  1. if they are really good (like the All Blacks) they run it to gain much more ground, but if its % Rugby they want & they want to last the distance they kick it. Its all a matter of tactics and grinding your opposition into the ground any way you are able.... Go the All Blacks

  2. they tend to kick it out of bound near to half time and full time if the score are close, and the leaders dont want to other team to get any where near the ball.

  3. i believe they kick the ball to give them time to think about what they really should have done before they kicked it. but under pressure good vision allows for kicks to gain advantage and rest the forwards and allowing players to regroup

  4. They kick it for field position. If they feel they are more likely to get a try by kicking it up the field for a line out to the other team. They only tend to do it if they are confident they can disrupt the line out and win posession back or else dominate them in rucks and force a turnover that way. Often a team can be stuck in their own half of the pitch for a while and if they arent making progress by working it through the backs then kicking for touch and hoping the forwards can do something is a good option. Teams with strong backlines dont tend to do it much.

Munster are very reliant on it as there back line is weak enough in comparrison to their forwards and they have possibly the best tactical kicker in the world in ronan o'gara. The forwards are good in the line out and this gives them a platform to attack which they feel is stronger than their backs.

Slowly working the ball up the field is also very very energy sapping.
