Why do they make the sides of swimming pools hard!!?

  1. If the walls were soft, the sides of the pool wouldn't hold in water well, because sadly, soft materials aren't always as durable as hard. And the sides of pools are hard because they're almost always made of plastic and/or cement.

    True, soft sides would be more protecting for swimmers, but they get moldy and icky wayy faster than hard surfaces. Would you want to be down there cleaning up all the stuff that sticks and grows on the pool sides? It's not a pretty job.

  4. Soft materials are less durable. Also, hard sides make for more powerful kick-turns, which is important if you swim competitively.

    Anyways, you should be hitting the side that hard since water has a way of slowing things down.
