Why do they make those "letters in the box" so hard to see?

You rremember when you joined Y/A and had to type those "letters in the box" and when I've joined other groups I've had to type those "letters in the box"

why are some so hard to see and others are so clear? I mean a spam robot can't tell the difference can they?

It hard because they do not want a computer program to make random accounts over and over. They only want real people.
