while reality is a deadly pain? in movies they show like titanics while real life we have plenty of eloped couple where the girl ends up abused and abandoned by her "once a perfect stranger". in movies there're so many kicking-butt women, while in reality very least of that kind available while in fact many women are raped, harassed and abused. in movies they show that marriage is a happy ending and since it has influence many of us in reality, that's one of the factors contributed to big number of divorces today.

Hollywood could be the place for best entertainments, but it is one of the biggest deceptions.

apart of the glitters, we know that there aren't less celebrities survived without drugs and died in suicide.

most people's ideology easily shaped by illogical fictions, not...life itself.

just wanna know what you think

  1. bcus people watch movies to relax not to be reminded of the horrors of this fallen world

  2. wow never thought about that.....

  3. ya im with the schindlers list guy, theres mad movies that portray the evils in this world such as abuse

  4. I guess you never saw the movie Schindler's List...not very nice things to see in that movie.

  5. it's called escapism.  people go to the theater to escape from the h**l hole of reality.

  6. you apparently are not watching a wide enough range of movies ...  I have seen many that have dysfunctional marriages, spouse abuse, drug addiction, the good person dies, the horrors government can bring upon its people, etc.

"chick flicks" have the majority of all the happy stuff because that is what "sells" in that genre ...  the rest of the categories like the true dramas and political thrillers and suspense and mystery/horror thrillers out there may not show "true life" but they sure as heck don't show all the perfect happiness you decribe ...

  7. You know that there a lot of movies being made outside of Hollywood, right?  Because movies do often portray the darker sides of life - you just have to broaden your scope a little bit in order to find them.  Film is an art form, and most of the greatest films being made today are being made outside of Hollywood (if not simply for the reason that there are a lot more films being made outside of it than inside.)  And while a film doesn't have to be realistic to be art, you'll find that filmmakers are more likely to create something of an artistic nature when freed from the constricting limits of Hollywood.

But, to answer your question, the reason most major Hollywood productions are so lacking in verisimilitude is because, simply, for most people movies are a way to escape the world for a few hours.  As such, if there are any extreme hardships presented (beyond, you know, the main character breaking up with his girlfriend), they will most likely be overcome within the two hour limit of the movie.  No, that's not always realistic.  Many people struggle throughout their lives to make ends meet.  They struggle with disabilities, and addictions, and so on and so forth.  But most people don't want to see that when they go to the movies - they simply want to go to relax.  To escape real life.  They just got off from an exhausting week at work, and they want to see something with a simple, happy ending.

However, there are those like me that enjoy a good variety of movies.  A mixture of those that portray a glamorized, unrealistic life and those that portray something a bit closer to reality.  And if you're looking for more of the latter, I would advise looking outside the confines of mainstream Hollywood.  In the independent film industry, and in the foreign film industry, filmmakers and screenwriters often have more freedom to make films about whatever they want them to be about.  They are often more personal than mainstream Hollywood films, as they aren't forced to make something that will appeal to the largest audience possible.

Anyways, as I hope I have explained, there are a whole lot of films that contradict your statement that "they only show nice things in movies."

Of course, some people - after spending their life only watching the latest Hollywood product - are accidentally exposed to some less mainstream film, and because they are different from what they are used to, they instantly discard all such films as "boring" or "too depressing" or "not what films are supposed to be like."  And, I think, it is important that you start your exploration outside of modern mainstream Hollywood in the right place.  Learning to appreciate all types of films is a lot like learning to swim.  Just as you wouldn't want to jump into the deep end the first time you've ever been in the water (though I hear the whole "swim or drown" suspense does work for a few people), or, for another analogy, you wouldn't want to try reading James Joyce before mastering Dr. Seuss - you wouldn't want to explore some of the more obscure realms of cinema before mastering the language of film, and knowing a bit about its history.  Like swimming, it's better to do it as a gradual process.  Making "L'avventura" the first foreign film you ever watch is likely to turn you off foreign films forever.  On the other hand, if you watch it after having experienced a wide variety of films, you might find it one of the greatest films you've ever seen.  After a little training, you may even begin to view such "off the beaten track" films just as entertaining (albeit in a different way) as the average Hollywood product.  And often far more enlightening, and intelligent, and artistic.

And it should be remembered that, even among these types of films, there's a whole wide range of filmmaking styles and techniques.  Some have incredibly fancy camerawork and effects ("Requiem for a Dream", about the horrors of drug addiction and one of the most harrowing films ever made) while others are made in as straightforward a manner as possible (see something by the Dardenne brothers, like "The Son", or the magnificent "L'enfant").  They certainly don't all have unhappy endings, even if they do tend to be a bit more ambiguous than your average Hollywood ending.  And some follow many of the techniques of Hollywood, but add their own "foreign twist" that makes them special ("Amelie", for instance.)

I personally recommend starting with some of the older Hollywood films (any of Hitchcock's masterpieces, "Citizen Kane") and some of the newer, more "mainstream" independent and foreign films (the films of Wes Anderson, "Raise the Red Lantern".)  Then moving on from there.

Of course, there are a whole lot of bad foreign films, and a whole lot of bad independent films - just as there are a whole lot of bad films that come out of Hollywood.  So if you stumble upon one that you think is bad - try something else.

  8. Just to name a couple:

Rambo 4, yes I know, showed about the mass killings, torture, and horrible things in Burma.  I don't exactly call that shiny or pretty or ideal.

Serenity (2005):  Showed how governments try to change you, shape you, also showed the aftermath of what can happen when that goes horribly awry.

Do you see a lot of movies.  It really doesn't honestly seem like it.  Most of the movies I see aren't glittery and shiny all over, but are gritty.  Yes some have a happy ending, but not all do.  I don't go for the s*x and the City c**p though.

  9. Hollywood will keep raking in the big bucks as long as people have misery in their own lives that they want to escape from for at least a couple of hours.

I admit they portray a fantasy world.  Gotta give the people what they want.  :)  After all, sometimes life it just toooo real.

  10. Movies make life seem perfect because it's not, and people want it to be. So, if they're watching a film about a couple who meets on a subway and falls in love people at home get the image that it's real and love it. If movies were based on real life no one would care because it's what they see every day. It's like an escape from reality, which is what everyone needs sometimes.

  11. sometimes things do work out for the best (opportunity meets prepreation) but some ppl in todays world embrace the hedonistic lifestyle and dont really think about the consequences where others do make choices wisely and it can work out in the long run...and there are movies where its not always a 'happy ending' i.e atonement, squid and the whale, the accused, saving private ryan

as for women getting raped, harassed, abused men get those too...and there are women who can kick butt like muhammed ali's daughter (i forget her name) who is/was a great boxer and have you seen the gymnasts in the olympics the things they do are amazing...if i was you i would stop making generalizations and stereotyping ppl its not very nice and you would like being a stereotype would you? cuz im sure there are some girls who would gladly kick you butt

  12. Schindler's List

    Perfect stranger

    Pursuit of happyness

    Crash
