  1. When they're stopped on the side of the road sleeping, they're not making any money.

  2. most over the road truckers get paid by the mile so if you dont get many miles per-day you dont have much of a paycheck at the end of the week(have you hugged your local trucker today . ask any trucker and they will tell you everybody gives them a hard time(DOT; high fuel prices;loaders ;shippers even the people that they work for and also other truckers and other people on the road the fix would be to pay a decent wage across-the-board and not pay by the mile(dirty little secret trucking companys do not want you to know)

  3. No one really pushes them, they have to push themselves in order to make their delivery on time.

If they're late, some money is going to get docked from their paycheck.

    most of the time.....

  4. The common saying is "If the wheels don't turn, I don't earn."

As much as a truck driver can make, it's expensive to be on the road, food and miscellaneous expenses take a large chunk of that paycheck.

Owner Operators have to pay high fuel prices, insurance, repairs (tires are usually $250 and up), and a myriad of other costs.

It's not always the driver pushing too hard either, sometimes it's the company they work for.  The Driver Manager or Dispatcher will tell a Driver that it's a really hot load that has to deliver by a certain time, or he'll have to wait a day or two to deliver it.

The most popular phrases from these guys are, "You're the only driver I have that can do this.", and "Just do what you have to to get the load delivered."  Of course, it's not their butts on the line if anything happens, like an accident, or being cited for Hours of Service violation.

Truck driving is hard work.  It's not the heroic thing you see portrayed in the movies.  Most drivers are intelligent, hard working people with families to take care of.  There are others who just don't care and will break the rules, no matter what happens, or who it happens to.

  5. If the truck isn't moving, they are not getting paid.

I did it for a while

  6. I'm not sure who "They" is... Truckers drive so much because; if they are not driving they are not making money. Truckers get paid by the shipment not the hour and not by salary.

  7. more miles driven mean more dollars made

  8. It is the way things work.

If you have a job, you produce a product. The product needs to be high quality and must be made efficiently.

The way to keep your job is by increasing your quality and increasing the efficiency.

If the trucker is to make money, he must carry more loads in less time.

  9. The more the trucks can be moving, carrying cargo from one place to another, the more money for the truck companies.

If they could figure out how to get a robot to drive the truck, and have it be legal, then they would fire all the truck drivers and replace them with robots, who never need to sleep.
