Why do they put cotton swabs in medicine bottles?

i'm just curious why there is cotton in bottles of pills or different medicines. what is the reason for it?

  1. To protect the pills from breaking and mainly to absorb moisture from the external environment(especially for solid drugs) as mentioned.


  2. Simply to keep the pills from moving around and breaking each other during shipping.

  3. It's a space filler so the pills don't rattle around as much and break.  It probably also provides a little absorbancy in case there's any water to evaporate in the bottle, but mostly it's just for packing purposes.  In the days before there used to be seals over the mouth of the bottle, it probably helped keep the pills from falling out if the bottle accidentally came open (yes, there are those of us who remember when pill bottles didn't automatically come with either safety caps or seals under them...*g*).
