  1. Depends on the type of martini. I drink "dirty" martinis, which have a splash of the olive juice in it. Makes it a bit salty to help with the vodka bite. Hope it helps...

  2. Why not?

Really, I don't know. I never have one. Is it only a side dish or does it have an impact on the taste?

One of those. I also found this:

"The olive and the juice it's covered in give some flavor - you don't need or want much."

  3. Because portobello mushrooms would just look silly.

  4. The olive gives the drink a little bit of flavor...a dirty martini is a regualar martini mixed with 2 table spoons of olive juice to give it extra flavor

  5. Various drinks were "invented" at different places at different times. The idea of an olive in a martini was "just the way it was."

BTW, if you put a cocktail onion in instead, it is called a gibson. Go figure.

Some people like a lemon twist instead, but us purist don't think that is appropriate.

Martinis are made with gin. If vodka is used, it is specified as a vodka martini.

    Good question.
