Why do they put red light bulbs in bathrooms?

My sister and I have seen them at our grandparents house and in our new house in the downstairs bathroom.

Is there a special reason?

They might use it as a dark room for photo development .

red light is not as distracting as regular light. Since most bathrooms are right next to bedrooms, they don't want to wake anyone.

red light will not effect your night vision, going to the bathroom in the middle of the night, and some scientists believe that it makes it easier to go back to sleep than if you were to blind yourself with a bright white light.

In the case of your grandparents it may be because it is easier on the eyes. Also pale rose light makes you look better than harsh white light!
