Hah!! Good question, I hate those!!! I think its to somehow keep track of their sales or something.  And make sure you know hwat company produced them!  Idk good question though!

i guess they wanna make sure that it doesn't fall off while in transit/transfer.

The stickers are actually pretty cool.  They identify what the product is and which country its from.  

In the middle you should see a 4 or 5 digit number.  If you live in the USA then the following applies:

Number starts with 4 and is 4 digits: means it was conventionally grown with pesticides, herbicides, etc.

Number starts with 9 and is 5 digits long: means it is organically grown

Number starts with 8: run like h**l, it's genetically-modified.

The stickers have a UPC code to identify the product.

For inventory and purchasing, not everyone working at a grocery store can look at an apple and say oh' that's a fuji, so the stickers 1: Tell you who gave you this wonderful veggie or fruit for advertising 2: Have a code number on it so at the register if the person doesn't know what it is can punch it in and you don't get charged for the wrong fruit/veggie  more or less.

Even if its obvious its a pineapple, it might be organic or it might be dole, they need to know these things :0)

You can't do much to a fruit or veggie without damaging it other than putting a sticker on it. Or wrapping it which would cost to much.

I hate those things. They are hard to get off, and sometimes it can't be done without damaging the skin of the fruit.

Good lord.  The sticker is the label just like any other label on food.
