Why do they say not to wear contacts during labor?

I wore my contacts during my labor 6 months ago and nothing happened.(I had to-my glasses were lost and I am blind without my specs/contacts!!) but when they found out I had them in they acted like it was bad. However, they never told me why it was bad. I have also read that you shouldn't, but nothing ever says why. Anyone know??

  1. Unless I'm mistaken, the only reason they don't want you to wear them is in case you have to have emergency surgery and they have to put you under.

But, I could be wrong. That's what my understanding is, though, and what I was told with my first.

  2. In case you had to have an emergency c section they often dont want contacts, makeup, piercings, jewlery or anything else on or in you since its surgery. Also with contacts often times if your eyes water and your sweaty which can happen with a hard labor you can loose them anyway. Glad you could keep yours~

  3. I assume it's because they may have to do emergency c section.  You can't wear contacts for surgery.
