I was always under the impression that a troop indicated numerous individuals whereas trooper means a singular person, I mean is it just a propagandaa ploy or what to get the people angry.

  1. The word troop is simply the plural of troops.  It is incorrect to call soldiers 'troops'.  A troop is in fact part of a squadron which forms a regiment of cavalry.

For example.  A private soldier in a cavalry regiment might have the rank of 'trooper', likewise a private soldier in the Royal Artillery has the rank of 'gunner'.  A private soldier in most infantry regiments is called a private but a private soldier in the foot-guards is called a guardsman.

The British Army is not nearly so simple as it appears.

My guess is that the media in general use the word troops because it makes it easy for them to get on with their reportage.
