  1. Good day,

Oysters have been consider, food for the gods.. and are wonderful. And believe me they are served at lots of event...

Oysters like cavier are consider rich mans food and an aphrodisiacs.. so eat oysters w/ one you love,....

  2. They are not messy or stimky at all. The shell is like a little plate that holds the flesh. Most people put a little mignonette or lemon juice on it, and there you go. They have a clean, slightly briney flavor. The reason why fresh oysters are so expensive is because they have to be used within 48 hours of being taken from the sea. So as you can imagine most of the cost is in the shipping and refrigeration fees. I think alot of people are intimidated by oysters, because they're raw and aren't particularly pretty to look at. They do have a "slimy" texture to them, but their refreshing flavor and coldness make them a staple at cocktale parties.

  3. Oysters were traditionally a delicacy of the upper class. This was probably due to their very perishable nature. In the old days, you couldn't keep them long. After refrigeration became readily available, so did oysters for the mass market, though the tradition stuck.

I can't speak for wherever you live, but here in the Mid Atlantic, especially in Maryland near the Chesapeake, oysters are for ALL occasions! It's not Christmas or Thanksgiving without oyster stuffing. Fried oysters at oyster and ham roasts are everywhere, as are raw bars. They're probably more popular in Amish dishes and backyard barbecues than they are at "high class" social events so I'm not sure we think of them the way you do.

I'm convinced the farther a delicacy gets from it's native land, the more upscale people think it is. I always here "inlanders" talk about crab cakes to be served with fancy pastas and champagne. Here in the land of crab cakes-- we know they're best next to cole slaw, corn-on-the-cob, a slice of Eastern Shore tomato and a cold beer. I've seen a similar effect with Maine lobster.

  4. Where did you get the idea they only serve oysters @ high class social events?  We eat them all the time @ home on the BBQ.  Wait till they pop add white wine, garlic& butter. Add chipotle tabasco, let them cool for a minute, pop them in your mouth & soak up the juices with garlic bread.  Now that's oakie!!  I guess we are just lucky living on the west coast where they are abundant!

  5. hAVE u been to a low class event???

because they serve oysters too... puhahaha

  6. OYSTERS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE, AND TEY HAVE T BE RIGHT, THEY SERVE THEM AT EVENTS CAUSE IS CNSIDERED A DELICATESSEN AS CAVIAR, IF YOU LIKE THEM EAT THEM IF YOU DONT  JUST LEAVE THEM. AND NO THEY RE NOT SLIMY, YOU EAT THEM IN ONE GULP, RIGHT OUT F THE SHELL.

  7. We are not high class, though, I do go fine dining. Let me tell you, our oysters from home is better than the restaurant style. For those who love oysters is like having a treat. The only reason why they serve it at social events because its all about showing off....money wise. Sometimes its hard to fine them...thats why they can be pricey. Food is not cheap when throwing a party....its not an original turkey, spiral ham, and mash potato.
