Question:

Why do they tell you to turn off electronics during takeoff/landing?

There have been numerous studies that prove that no electronic, no matter how strong or close/far it is from anywhere in the plane, would interupt anything during the process.

I rely on my iPod to save me from a panic attack during my flights, especially during takeoff and landing, which are the worse parts of the flight. I have my seatbelt on the whole time so it can't be so that I'm informed to fasten my seat belt. So, why can't I use it?

  1. This law like most  is to protect you and  others.  Yopu have 2 choices obey or dont  go  . tell  the attendant  you have this fear . thse people know how to help you. Good Luck

  2. During take-off and landing you are asked not to use any electronic devices for a few reasons.

The first reason is that take-off and landing are the most critical times during a flight. Should something go wrong, everyone must be able to hear the Flight Attendants and follow directions.

Another reason electronics may not be used during take-off and landing is because of a risk called electromagnetic interference.

Electromagnetic interference is experienced by all of us on a regular basis. An example of this is if you put a cell phone near the computer, you can hear loud static in the computers speakers every time the phone rings, and the screen may start to shake. This technically should never happen, but the wire to each speaker is acting like an antenna, and it picks up side bands in the audible range. This is not a dire problem -- just a nuisance. But notice how common it is. In an airplane, the same phenomena can cause big trouble.

An airplane contains a number of radios for a variety of tasks. There is a radio that the pilots use to talk to ground control and air traffic control (ATC), a radio that the plane uses to disclose its position to ATC computers, there are radar units used for guidance and weather detection, and so on. All of these radios are transmitting and receiving information at specific frequencies. If someone were to turn on a cell phone, the cell phone would transmit with a great deal of power (up to 3 watts for a single phone). If it happens to create interference that overlaps with radio frequencies the plane is using, then messages between people or computers may be garbled. If one of the wires in the plane has damaged shielding, there is some possibility of the wire picking up the phone's signals just like a computers speakers do. That could create faulty messages between pieces of equipment within the plane. Now imagine what would happen if everyone on the plane were to use electronic devices, and you should be able to fully understand the ban on such devices.

Your iPod can be used once you reach your cruising altitude, which should only take a few minutes.

  3. Radiowaves can interfere with there electronics and radars...turn them off

  4. You  are misinformed about "studies...." Under federal law, it is unlawful to operate such devices contrary to orders from the flight crew.

Do you think that airlines tell you not to do things just for the heck of it? Grow up. Using one can land you in jail or in court or just delayed for a while.

  5. Everyone above is misinformed.

It doesn't and won't do anything to damage any radio equipment on flight.

    Keep it on :) , I do.

    Come on, seriously.

So that means if I wanted to crash the plane, *TURNS ON MY RADIO*  and bam the plane crashes?

    LOL AT YOU brainwashed kids

It doesn't do anything to interrupt the flight.

Radio frequencies airplanes use are on totally different bands.

But then of course, if you tell them to s***w off when they ask you tod o something, that's not very bright.
