Why do they waste natural gas from oil fields?

Oil fields/refineries always have natural gas 'flares' where the gas is being burned off. Why is it wasted in this way instead of collected and sold ?

  1. Economics, mostly. That gas has a low heat content, so there is little demand for it.


  2. that is a very good question and im looking forward to that answer.. there has been one burning for 10 years about 10 miles from my house.. why? why waste that?
