  1. Well, as previous people have said (and I'm sure you already knew), it is because of gravity.

    Gravity is the force of attraction between any two masses.  The force of gravity is proportional to the mass of the object, so an object with a larger mass will have a stronger gravitational pull.  The reason objects with a smaller mass curve around the larger object instead of being pulled in was answered by Einstein's Theory of Relativity, which stated that the objects warped space-time . . . basically like, sagged space.  The way it would look would be like placing a bowling ball on a mattress  . . . so they travel in a curved path instead of being pulled straight in.
