Question:

Why do things sound quieter in the morning and louder at night?

When I watch T.V. in the morning, I have to turn it up because it's too quiet. When I get home (and no one has watched the T.V.) at turn the T.V. on, I have to turn it down. Especially at night, the later it gets the more I turn it down. Why could this be - is there a scientific explanation?

  1. you arent fully awake in the morning? there is more noise around you during the day (traffic etc?) the real question is why do commercials always get louder??

  2. because when you're tired, your ears get sensitive

  3. because in the morning youve body and its function are still getting on form and not 100% as youve had a sleep with, and at night youve been on form all day so your likely to be more sensitive and efficent to sounds

  4. It might be that there's more background noise in the morning.

Obviously, I'd have to guess at what noises are near you. Rush-hour traffic, if you're near any, could be a factor. So could loud birdsongs, if you've got many birds nearby. Or industrial facilities getting started for the day (which they usually do pretty early). Are you under any airport approach routes?

It's not likely all of these apply to any location, of course.

You might also simply be paying attention more at night. Less light could mean less distraction.

And the ads, it seems to me, always run louder at night relative to the shows. (There's a rule about volume, but it's based on amplitudes, and some advertisers use a technique of "clipping" the wave peaks which makes them seem louder while staying within the rules.)

  5. There is a mixture of more different ambient sounds in the morning, a lot of cars on the street, birds, people talking, music men working and a lot of stuff... At night, there is a significant decrease in sounds as people sleep and stop working, talking or moving about... So with much less background noises, you tend to hear more clearly and loudly the same sound at night than during the day...

  6. in the morning there are a lot more sounds around u , when at night there are absolutly no sounds !

  7. The speed of sound is based on temperature and the medium it currently occupies. The relationship between speed of sound and temperature is V = .5T + 331 where T equals temperature and V = speed/velocity. At night is is hotter then the mourning because the sun has been out for the whole day.
