Why do those tiny little bugs fly in a cluster?

What are they called and why do they all fly together in one spot? I usually only see them in the summer.

  1. I think you're thinking of gnats, and they fly together like that for basic survival methods. i.e. there's safety in numbers.

    also, when they fly in one spot together, it makes them look like a large object rather than many small prey items, so predators may think twice before going after them.
