Why do top seeds get bye in their first round matches at the masters series events?

  1. They get a bye in the first round because first they could be coming from another tournament and gives them a couple of days to rest, second it tests if they are ready, and third they can enter more players who qualify for the tournament.


  2. Being some tournaments have less the amount of players and a non equal draw, the top seeds usually are given the bye. You can say that is there "reward" for being a seeded/top player if you will. Gives them the luxury of having to play one less match to get the title. Slams start with 128 players, but Masters Series events sometimes have 96 or 64 players, with top 16 getting first round bye and one less round then a Grand Slam.
