Why do tv show characters always crawl through air vents?

Question

ok, yeah this is a pretty stupid question but i just had to ask. so u know how in tv shows and cartoons theres always a time where the characters crawl through those little gray square air vents in the ceiling. well does ANYONE actually do that in real life?? like EVER? and are they even big enough to fit 1 or 2 people and strong enough to hold them?? just wondering, idk, it seems fun

Most air vents are not big enough for anyone to fit through. It's just sort of a cliche that comes from old spy movies or something.

It depends... my dad worked on HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems for years, and while I could easily fit through most ductwork for large buildings, there's some (usually for house-sized buildings) that even I wouldn't be able to fit through, and I'm pretty tiny. As far as whether or not they could hold up a person, it would depend on how it was installed in the building in question. I'm pretty certain that most of them could hold me up if I army-crawled on my belly (keeping my weight spread out), but if an average-sized person tried to crawl like they do in movies, the ductwork would get a little banged up at the very least, or... at the very worst, see Boondock Saints =P

What amazes me most is how clean those things are in movies!

I personally never saw one I could fit into (and I'm pretty small) and even then, I think I would develop a case of claustrophobia doing so.

I love movies but I don't really believe them. In real life, a stray bullet will kill someone but in movies, bad guys and good guys have to shoot at each others for at least five minutes before anybody hit anything!
