  1. Bugs. They can hurt when you hit them with your face at 70+ mph, and you do not want the distraction of that on landing or on take off.

    Regards,

    Dan

  2. If at night, it's so the cabin lights don't interfere with the pilot's vision.

However, it's much more common they ask to RAISE them":

"FAA regulations require that window shades be up for two reasons, both of whom have to do with emergency evacuation:

1- So the crew can easily see the safest egress from the aircraft, and appropriately direct the passengers.

2- As has been documented in crashes past, with the shades DOWN on evacuation, passengers get disoriented. They either freeze, or run off at worst endangering themselves (and first responders who now have to find them) or make it difficult to determine who is still on the jet."

  3. They dont want you to see the plane crash into the ground?

  4. ive never been asked to do that :-P wierd

  5. Isn't this like the 1,592nd time for this question???

Because it's a rule, that's why. Just act like a German and follow it. (I've spent 14 years in Germany, so I know how they like their rules, except of course standing in a single file line, you can forget that.)

  6. Jim, which FAA regulation requires this?  I've only seen this on foreign airlines, never US domestic or international flights.  I fly US domestic, and know of no such regulation.  I think some airlines have this rule, but it's not an FAA reg.

When you are requesting armed intervention for a terrorist act, better to close them so the good guys can better surprise the bad guys.  Closing them for the heat is a good idea, but only after you arrive at the gate.

  7. I dont in the summer, the windows on a C-172 can be open for all speeds up to Vne. If its hot, i leave them open.

Commerical aircraft windows dont open, other then the "Whiskey Hatch" in the cockpit, but they close this to maintain cabin pressure.

I belive your referring to the window shades, and in this case, its an airline policy, not a regulation.

  8. I think you have it backward.  They ask you to OPEN the shades on the windows.  This for the benefit of all the other people on the plane who are more comfortable being able to see out during landing and for safety reasons where an emergency might require available daylight to illuminate the interior during evacuation.

    .

  9. most airlines tell you to open your window shades instead of closing them.  the reason is for safety measure. most airlines do it to help the pilots or the airplane crew. If anything goes wrong, like a piece of metal flying off, or some fire, you can help by alerting the crews. The pilot cant really see whats happening at the area, but you can. They can only rely on the computers they have but they may be some sore of malfunction. Another aspect is if there is an accident like a crash, you would know where to get out.

  10. Never done it and never heard of anyone being asked to do it.

  11. because it helps to keep the temperature up or down and helps to ease the passengers if there afraid of flying.
