Because if you take an elevator in a fire, you might get trapped in it.

  1. No, it's so the firemen can use the elevator. It is also safer for people to go down the stairwells because they are usually ventilated and pressurised to prevent smoke and fire from getting in. They are often a fairly strong part of the building - perhaps the strongest part though is around the lift wells.

  3. fire = stuck in lift = oh dear!

fire = running down steps to go outside without getting stuck in anything = happy person :)

  4. When people could have escaped down the stairwells in the WTC bombings, many were told to stay and wait for rescue, probably because the thought of mob panic, that was known to kill in such cases. Big tragic mistake!

  5. Yep, fire and electrical dont mix well and but using the stairs do.

  6. Because it is safer.

  7. The elevator doors may open on the floor where the fire is - burning everyone inside the elevator. The fire may be in the elevator shaft, so if you take it, you may either go up into the fire or down into the fire or the fire may burn the supports and machinery operating the elevator, making it catch fire or fall.

Travelling on the stairway, you can see what's ahead of you and feel the heat if you're getting closer or farther away from the fire.

  8. Because you don't want to jump in the window.
