Why do vampires have red eyes?

Question

Of all the vampire animes i watch,it seems most vampires have red eyes.Why is this?What does having red eye mean or signify?Can a vampire not have red eyes?

in Vampire Knight, the vampires have red eyes, i think its because its to help them see at night cos they are nocturnal , or maybe when they see blood and get excited their eyes also turn red

becuase it makes the effect cooler also i thiknk its becuase when blood trigers there sences there vampireness kicks in and there eyes turn red with obession and becuase thre cool like thast

I believe it is just because people find red eyes to be cool. Because no one that i am aware of has red eyes in real life.
