Why do vultures sit with wings spread in dead trees sometimes?

  1. Vultures will often sit on a perch in the sun with their wings spread out . It might be to warm their wings or dry their feathers. I am not sure of the exact reason. I've often seen them doing this on cold mornings.


  2. Probably to absorb heat from the sun. They have dark feathers and dark colors absorb heat. That is the only reason I know. I saw it on discovery channel.

  3. Jeff and Sparrow are right. They also are mimicking politicians.

  4. They do this to either cool or heat themselves up.  They may be absorbing heat into their wings or drying them, or they could be opening wings to let air flow to their body to cool themselves.
