  1. A plastic is a kind of polymer which can be moulded easily into any desired shape.

    Plastics can also be divided into two types: Thermoplastics and Thermosetting plastics.

    A polymer is a class of substance which is made up of many molecules. There can be many types of polymers like polythene, PVC, polystyrene etc.

Plastic describes a condition and polymer describes a particular molecular structure that is often plastic.  Deep within the earth's crust it is so hot that the layer is plastic (although it likely contains few polymers).  Plastic stems from the Greek to form.  Polymer stems from the Greek many + parts, for example a chain of similar molecules. (which may or may not be soft and plastic).
