  1. the reason we call it AUSSIE RULES is because there is too many footballs

    like soccer, american football etc.

the americans call it american football and we call it aussie rules football

  2. Aussie Rules is not our national game.

    Cricket is.

  3. Aussie Rules is the only National game we have.

NRL is played in other countries love watching the Kiwis and the Aussies do battle

Rugby Union is played in other countries love watching the Kiwis and the Aussies do battle, and want to see the Aussies beat England so bad.

Soccer is played in other countries - Australian players are playing in other countries

Cricket another great game, was played in England we just took it from them and became better than them.

Aussie Rules - The closest international comp there is ..... is GayLick football and the rules had to be changed cause the Australian team tackled to hard.

Until Aussie Rules is played at an international level where the rules stay the same and matches can be country V country as it is with the above codes. Aussie Rules will always be our one true National game.

Cricket, Union, League, and Soccer can all be played against other Countries ...... and, AFL at this stage can't, that makes it the national game.

  4. You are correct, AFL= Australian Football League. It is a derivation of the game of football , played under rules which are unique to the Australian version. The closest game to AFL would be Gaelic Football.

  5. because Aussie does rule. and because the competition is called AFL not the game. We don't call Rugby league NRL or rugby union Super fourteen. Thank god we dont call cricket "IPL"

  6. AFL is the name of the league.

The AFL is a competition involving 16 clubs from all over Australia playing Australian Rules Football played at the highest level.

Locally it's called football or footy.

In Australia the round ball game is called soccer.

  7. yes it is aussie rules football

  8. It's actually called Australian Rules Football, incorporating the fact that it is Australian, and it's football.

  9. People call it Aussie Rules because they're too embarrassed to call it 'football'.

It is claimed by AR supporters that it is the national game because it is not international - no other country has bothered to take it on because it is just too boring.

I don't know why they still refer to the game as football because it has become more of a cross-country wrestling game nowadays. Far worse & longer scrums & mauls that is in Rugby Union, even - far more than in Rugby League.

It is more handball than foorball now. And they changed the rules of how one can handpass - it is virtually a throw now. Once a player had to hold the ball in one hand & punch it with the other. One rarely sees handpasses like that these days.

  10. Becuase we're Australian and we rule.

  11. it should be called soccer

  12. We call it AFL.

Football is the global game with clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid or AC Milan.  Locally, football clubs are Melbourne Victory, Perth Glory or Sydney FC.

    A League is Football

    AFL is AFL

  13. It's AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL, that's why.   call it Aussie rules, rules, football or footy just don't call it bloody AFL, any imbecile can see  AFL is the name of the league that governs the highest  Aussie rules comp in Australia.

Some of the answers have been quite amusing, Americans do not call their game, American football, to them there is no other football, most believe that football is what they play, 'grid iron',   poms call soccer, football, which is probably the closest description that fits all the so called 'footballs', it is played predominately with the feet, except for the goalkeeper.

In Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth it's just called footy, but head north and the idiots up there call it AFL,  just makes no sense, "g'day mate, i play Australian Football League", sounds stupid hey.
