Friendship Day is an international day of recognition of friends.  This is personally as well as nationally.  It is recognized around the world to varying extents.  Although in many places it is still relatively unknown. The first Sunday of August was selected for this in 1935.  This year the first Sunday in August just happened to be 08/03/08.
