Why do we describe a junk or purposeless message "Spam"?

Well what are people's thoughts?

Was there a time when everyone hated spam and thought it was purposeless?

Was a fat internet programer eating Spam at the time?

Who will ever know?

Well if you don't need the message and it has nothing to do with you then its just an annoyance. A.K.A spam.
