Why do we eat certain types of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner?

We eat 'breakfast food' for breakfast, 'lunch food' for lunch, and 'dinner food' for dinner. Why is this? Hamburgers are healthy, why don't we eat them for breakfast? Whole wheat cereal is good for you too, why can't we eat that for dinner? Has this way of life just been ingrained in us for many centuries? Or is there some reason for this behavior?

  1. breakfast foods are usually carbohydrates, like waffles, pancakes, french toast, cereal, with sugar added like maple syrup and they give you energy for the rest of the day. lunch foods are inbetween, it can be a breakfast or dinner food. but dinners take longer to cook, i mean who has time to boil potatoes, make mashed potatoes and meatloaf in the morning before work?

  2. well, theres a diet where you eat like dinner, for breakfast, lunch like normal, and then you eat cereal for dinner, it works!! i tried it

  3. hmm...that is interesting. I'm not sure.

I do know that if I eat real food like a hamburger for breakfast then my stomach hurts.

But i do eat cereal for dinner sometimes. :)

  4. not sure how all that got started but.... i don't always follow it....

i eat what i'm hungry for regardless of the time of day....

i have had pizza, enchiladas, fettuccini for breakfast... and i have prepared scrambled eggs with sausage or omelets for dinner...

    i'm different..............

  5. Usually Breakfast foods are high in sugars! After not eating any food overnight, a persons glucose levels drop! Eating a sweet breakfast boost sugar levels up!

    Especially in Diabetics!

  6. Tradition and habit is part of it, I have no doubt, but I think another big part of it is lifestyle. When you wake up in the morning, you need to eat something that is convenient, easy to make and cooks fast so you can get to work or school on time. Most breakfast foods do fit into this category if you think about it: eggs, bacon, sausages, cereal (hot or cold), yogurt, toast, waffles, pancakes, etc.

Lunch may need to be portable, since a person may not be home during lunchtime to cook. Sandwiches are very portable.

To make anything more complex you'd need a lot more time, which many do not have during morning and lunch, but do have in the evenings for dinner.

  7. Because in the morning your body usually requires lots of carbohydrates to refuel, since they break down more easily into energy and can be utilized by the body faster. They are also easier to digest, hence easier on the stomach. Such high-carbohydrate foods include common breakfast staples such as breakfast cereal, toast, bagels, waffles, muffins, pancakes, etc. Lunch food is more dictated by the American culture/lifestyle, because around 12 pm, people are usually at work or school and eat a quick lunch. So sandwiches and wraps are easy to grab and eat on the go. Dinner food is usually the home-cooked meals because people are usually at home and have time to cook. People usually don't want to eat the same thing they had for breakfast or lunch, and since those meals were lighter, they want a heavier meal at night. Hope this kinda helped..lol. I feel like I was saying common sense things toward the end but that's the best way I can explain it.
