  1. The Chinese celebrated the lantern/Moon Fairy festival with Moon cakes but there is another significance to your question which is more historic.

    Think it was during the time of the Sung Dynasty ? when China was under the rule of the Mongol hordes, the rebels/freedom fighters smuggled their secret messages in mooncakes during the lanten festival.
