Why do we frame pictures?

We frame paintings, photos,window has a frame,even monitors and LCD televisions have frames. What is in people that make us do this?

I think in older days there was no technique to display a painting ,photo etc. without the frame. Now with the modern techniques it is personal choice and looks like most people choose for that.

It establishes a sense of permanence.  Frames also look fancy when your trying to show off your family and friends to peers I guess.  Borders always project images to look more bold.

For pictures it helps to not have the corners curl, and keeps it all flat.

For the television, it holds it all upright and speakers can be in the side panels or "framework"
