  1. A mole (melanocytic nevus) is just a harmless overgrowth or piling up of melanocytes, skin cells that contain the pigment melanin.  They usually start to appear in childhood (sometimes present at birth), and increase in size and number with age.  They occur more frequently with sun exposure, not surprising as melanin is the pigment that tries to protect us from the sun's damaging rays.  Genetics plays a role; some families are more likely to develop moles than others.  Having a large number of moles indicates a higher risk for cutaneous melanoma, a dangerous type of skin cancer.
