  1. The two important factors in power lines is that they have to reach over vast distances, and they have to be kept safely away from the general public.

    The second factor is really the limiting one, and it leaves you with only a few options. You can bury the cable, or you can hang it far up out of reach. Hanging the wires is ideal because it allows repairs or alterations to be made quickly and easily. Furthermore, it is far easier to hang the wire over terrain that is difficult to dig in (such as rock and tough soils). Buried cables have the additional promlem that they can be damaged by digging, running a risk to the individual as well as the electrical grid. Overhead calbes are just cheaper and more utilitarian than any other options.
